For those of you curious as to why she needs ethnic specific donations. To put it simply, every ethnicity carries certain antigens in their blood. Antigens that may not be compatible with other ethnicities and the antigens they may or may not carry. It doesn't always simply come down to just basic blood types and whether they are (-) or (+). Depending on where ancestors and/or even yourself came from, will determine which antigens you do or do not carry. It comes down to environmental factors and adaptability to that environment. These antigens can be passed on through generations even if you have never stepped foot in or on the land your ancestors (ethnic group) came from. Blood is pretty amazing and you can learn a LOT from a single drop, like what part of the world you came from and more specifically, province. I work for the Puget Sound Blood Center in Seattle, WA and we don't only take blood donations, but we also take samples to register people for the Be The Match program. We are always strongly encouraging any ethnicity outside of European decent to sign up. I have been on the registry and will more than likely never be contacted but I am always ready and willing if the time comes. We had 2 African American women sign up at one blood drive and they were both contacted the following week because they were a match. Like I said, most will go an entire lifetime without ever be a match. These women were contacted in a week! That is how desperate they are to find those ethnic matches.
You can go to a blood bank, find local marrow drives or request a packet online. It takes but a few minutes to get on the list. If you are contacted it can be either a blood component donation or a full on marrow donation. It costs you nothing. If you are a match, the recipients insurance or the hospital pay for everything required to get your donation. Most think it is scary and painful to donate marrow, I won't lie...it is uncomfortable. But after about a week of soreness, you're back to normal again. One week of my life in discomfort is well worth it knowing I am helping take away someone else's long term discomfort and giving them their life back. I'd hope someone was willing to do the same for me. Sign up right away, you never know if you'll be called on to be a hero and save a life!
And Khloe, I truly do hope your cousin finds her hero!

Being part Armenian and active in marrow recruitment, this story is personal to me...Armenians, ethnic minorities and mixed people have such LOW numbers on the registry. Give hope to patients like CiCi and register! I hope the Kardashians will use their celebrity status to continue on spreading the word!

Registering is easy and painless (must be healthy and 18-60 yrs old), if you have questions or concerns please feel free to contact me via facebook or email at athena@mixedmarrow.org or check our online calendar for in-person drives! We also register donors to the national registry, Be The Match.

Khloe, Why does the donor have to be of Armenian descent? Seems to me that is not a requirement.. She is not accepting any matching stem cells? I have never heard of this.

Khloe--There is a non-profit organization called the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry, which does exactly what your cousin needs.

They have collected samples from thousands of individuals of Armenian ancestry . Your cousin may have better luck is she tries them first.

Just a thought. Here's their website: http://www.abmdr.am/about-us/
