Kim, Rob and I attended a dinner over the weekend hosted by the Etchmiadzin Children's Fund, which raises money and awareness for disadvantaged children throughout Armenia.
The purpose of the event was to raise funds to help to send clothing, school supplies, medicine, and other necessities that these children are not fortunate enough to have.
The fundraiser was for such an unbelievable cause and Kim, Rob and I were so flattered to have been invited.

I love raising money for foundations. It always makes me feel good. I work with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation because my best friend past away last year from it. Finding a cause true to your heart is always a great way to give back.

I totally understand everything said by the people that just don't appreciate Armenians. You can't be proud of people that come to America, don't respect law and take advantage of things; however, you also can't sit here and talk bad about other races. There are lots of stereotypes and just a few is that black females are trashy, hispanics have kids at 15.. and so on.
But the point is that if you are highly educated you wouldn't randomly sit here and post about "Ya, my cousin told me all this bad stuff about Armenians since she lives in Burbank," when this post is about a charity event. The reason why Armenians' names have come forward is because 40% of Glendale's population is Armenian. So obviously it's common stats. and sense that 1 out of 2 people arrested will be Armenian. Think about Los Angeles, doesn't it make sense to say 1 out of 2 people arrested for drugs and so on, will be black? Please just use your brain.
Also the only reason why people don't hear about white people doing fraud and filing for bankruptcy is because all of America is practically white. Glendale is the city with the largest Armenian population, but that's it. For white people, the largest population is in every state. I'd say 30 out of 50 states are mostly all white.
When you watch the news, that covers all of California and the nation, do you see all Armenian headlines? Maybe once a year! How many white people like Scott Peterson do you see? I understand,its true what you are saying. But, there's Armenian all around the country and states. It isn't right for someone to talk against Armenians only for one town which is Glendale. My story below speaks of a surgery that was going to give me mylife back, but today instead of getting my surgery date I have learned that I have to come up with about $2,500.00 before I can have surgery. Needless to say I was crushed. Are there organizations or charities out there that would or could help me?? Do you know? I know my story is long but I am hoping you will read it!! this is all the results of first a medical misdiagnosis that nearly killed me and second, a botched surgery job from a surgeon who just figured I was never going to live through the surgery anyways!!
Hi, my name is Mary Durbin, I live in Fredericktown, Ohio. I am a 45 year old mother of two children, they are 23 and 18. I have a story I think you might find interesting. It involves a lot of information. The main reason I would so love to see this story be broadcast is because every year thousands of people suffer from this same disease, Chronic Pancreatitis. There are new options available for people who suffer from this disease and yet so many people do not realize that there is hope, hope of enjoying life once again. My story begins in April 2003. My story begins with an almost fatal misdiagnosis. Here it is:
April 2003, I woke up about 2:00 a.m., and had severe abdominal pain. I could not go back to sleep and so I sat up in a chair for a couple hours hoping it would go away or at least ease up some. By about 6:00 a.m., I realized it was only getting worse and I woke up my boyfriend and told him something was wrong. My past history really briefly is that I rarely ever got sick, I think the last time I had seen my primary care doctor had been about a year before that. So he took me to the local Emergency Room. By the time we had gotten to the ER, I could not even stand up and though I was going to pass out. So he took me to the ER door and they came out and put me in a wheel chair and wheeled me into the ER. The ER Doctor examined me, performed some tests and told us there was nothing wrong that I should just go home. My boyfriend, thankfully, knew the ER doctor as they golf together, he said hey you know she is never sick and I just do not feel good about taking her home like this. So the doctor decided to keep me in the hospital under observation.
This was at 7:00 a.m. So I was taken up to a floor and pretty much watched. My primary care physician was called and she just kept putting me off. She even asked them to do a Tox Screen, which for me was quite insulting because I did not nor did I ever do drugs. In fact, when it came to pain pills, I was a light weight and could not handle most of them.
AS the hours ticked by I got worse and worse. The big thing I do remember was that I had been laying on my left side, I had found if I laid on my left side I could just barely tolerate the pain. If I even attempted to rollover onto my back I would just about black out the pain would become so intense. I remember one time I needed to use the bathroom and I buzzed the nurse. A nurse came in and literally ripped down the bed sheets, pulled my underwear down to my ankles and said rollover and get on the bedpan. I told her I could not, I said if I do I will pass out the pain is just too bad. She said “Well I guess you won’t be using the bathroom then!” She pulled the bed pan out and pulled the sheets back up, leaving my underwear down around my ankles. So again I just laid there and laid there. Later when the shift changed another nurse came in, much nicer. She explained they were going to have to put a catheter in since I had not used the bathroom all day. She said I had to rollover on my back. Again I explained how horrible it was pain wise to even attempt to do that. She was very nice. She said I am going to hold your hand and we will do this together ok. So I did it, I rolled over onto my back and the pain was just excrutiating and I blacked out. The rest of the time was spent in and out of consciousness for me. About 4 a.m. the following morning I was transferred to I.C.U. because my blood pressure had dropped so low. I was not doing well. It was not until about 5 hours later that they finally called in another doctor, a surgeon. The surgeon came around 9:30 am and immediately took me to CatScan. During the catscan I heard him talking and I heard him tell the nurses, it was too late. He said you waited to call me, its too late. WE have to do surgery on this woman because we have to do it but no way will she ever come off that operating table alive. My spleen had ruptured. So he did the surgery and somehow, miraculously I survived. He even said he had no clue how I did but I did. I was given 8 units of blood. It is funny, everyone who came to see me in ICU right after that said it was a good thing I had dark hair because that was the only way they could tell where I was in the bed. I was so white I blended right in with the sheets.\
So I finally got released from the hospital and life went on. A couple months later I started getting abdominal pain again. It got slowly worse. A couple times I had gone to the ER because I was just so sick and in pain. They once again found nothing, they told me things like I was constipated or that it was probably gas. Finally I found a new physician and she did tests on me, she called me and told me to report to the hospital, I would need to be admitted, I had pancreatitis. This was the first time I had ever heard of the disease but trust me it would not be the last.
The months following I just kept feeling bad, etc., I would get so sick I would go to ER and be admitted with Pancreatitis. That year 2004, I was only admitted a few times with it, and there for a while I thought I would never get it again. Then 2005 came and it got worse. I was taken to OSU Medical Center for testing, etc., they thought maybe it was my gallbladder, so they took it out. Then I would be okay for a month or two and then boom sick again and back to the hospital with Pancreatitis once again. I kept trying to work but kept having to go back in the hospital.
In the year 2006 I think I was hospitalized about 16 or 17 times. Each stay would be no less than 10 days long, one time I even had to stay in for a month. I also went to a Nursing home for a while because my doctor wanted to try feeding me by TPN and I had to be in the nursing home for that. That was horrible.
The specialists I went to see kept telling me to learn to live with the disease, that this was how life would be for me from now on, no cure, nothing they could do. There was one doctor who, whenever I asked him what I could do to stop these attacks, he would tell me to stop drinking. I did not drink nor did I use to drink so I found that offending. But he said well there is just nothing you can do.
I was not happy with that answer nor would I accept it. So I researched it and I found the University of Cincinnati. I went there and went to their pancreas clinic. I found the best bunch of specialists I had ever known, they are beyond fabulous.
So we tried different things and nothing helped. So in 2007, they wanted to do a surgery called a Total Pancreatectomy with Islet Cell transplant. The problem was my insurance would not pay for the islet cell part which was about $25,000.00. I did not have that kind of money so I was not able to have the surgery. My specialist thought another surgery which is called a “WHIPPLE” might help me. So I agreed and in November 2007 I had the Whipple surgery. It was a HARD SURGERY, the hardest I had ever been through up until then. The recovery was tough too. There were a few times I would just sit and cry because it was just so hard. But I recovered and I was good, healthy, normal for about 8 months. Then the pancreatitis came back. I was just so devastated and saddened by this. But I could not give up. My son was still at home, still in school and my daughter had had my first grandbaby. I wanted to be normal for them.
So now insurance has changed and I am now able to have the Total Pancreatectomy with Islet Cell transplant. It is a huge surgery. There are only about 3 Centers in the UNITED STATES that offers this surgery for Chronic pancreatitis sufferers. I have researched it A LOT. I have talked to others who have had the same surgery. I Am more than ready to have the surgery and get a chance at having my life back.
The surgery, they remove your pancreas but they harvest your islet cells that are in your pancreas and they transplant them into your Liver!! These islet cells then kind of nestle into your pancreas and if all goes well, they begin to act and work just like they did in your pancreas and begin controlling your blood sugar, producing insulin, etc., so that hopefully you will not be at all diabetic, if they do not get enough of the islet cells you will be diabetic – it will be easily manageable and controlled however due to the islet cell transplant. It’s a huge decision and a huge surgery. Afterwards you will also need to take Pancreatic Enzymes when you eat so that your food is able to be digested. Recovery takes a while. But soon you will be living life pain free again. I know to a lot of people having diabetes does not sound like a great tradeoff but it is trust me it is. Being pain free would be such a miracle for me, not being in a hospital every few weeks will be a miracle. This surgery is a miracle.
Unfortunately, so many people out there suffering with this do not realize this is available to them. They have no idea that there are options, hope and help. I have tried all through battling this illness to seek out and find people who suffer from it as well to tell them about it and get them hooked up to the people who can help them. I began by setting up a Myspace page for Pancreatitis. And have contacted and been contacted by so many wonderful people facing the same battle as I have been facing for 6 years now. I have even had the pleasure of being able to help some of these people, its been an inspiration.

wow! I totally agree with the comments made by Elizabeth and the others about Armenians in Glendale and Los Angeles area. I'm a native Angeleno and growing up in LA you are use to being surrounded by all other races but I have never seen a race as dishonest,ignorant and materialistic as the Armenians. Anyone living in this area knows what I am talking about. The majority of Armenians cheat the system to get ahead including education. I attended college in Glendale and most of Armenians cheat. They have the "take" "give" mentality and don't really care if they have to bury you to get ahead. They drive insanely careless, and most of them live in apartments under Section 8 with nice cars. About 99% of the women get some form of plastic surgery and the men go bald before 30..strangely from their heads only.
